What is Regenerative Leadership?

Regenerative Leadership is a grounded approach to leadership that cultivates the knowledge and resilience to inspire positive change in our individual selves and our collective systems. It goes beyond traditional leadership models by incorporating embodied awareness around self and identity, and understanding the interconnectedness of our collective systems and cultures. Regenerative leaders are committed to self-growth, work toward social or environmental justice, and have a deep desire to address the complex issues facing us in these modern times - such as race and gender equity, climate crises, community building, cultivating reciprocal relationships and fostering individual and collective healing.

As a Regenerative Leader, you work on three pillars that equip you with the knowledge, tools, and information you need to become an adaptive, innovative and heart-centered leader.

In the first pillar, you cultivate compassion for yourself through mindfulness, self-reflection, and embodied awareness.

Through the second pillar, you learn to identify who you are and the stories that defined how you

navigate the world.

In the third pillar, you learn how our systems are interconnected in ways that shape how we experience varying degrees of marginalization based on our intersecting identities. We also explore our relationship to power, privilege and histories of oppression.

By cultivating embodied awareness, understanding the self, and understanding systems of power, we are better equipped to implement actions that transform our lives, systems and leadership - creating deep positive change for ourselves, our communities, and our organizations.

Regenerative Leadership is an embodied practice of showing up to our work and life with a deep commitment to healing ourselves and our collective systems.

"Being one of the scholarship recipients for the Regenerative Leadership programme in the 2023 cohort was a timely opportunity. Not only was I lucky enough to share space with an incredible group of women who are creating sustainable solutions in their fields, but especially to learn and unlearn from Liza. The course outlines society's structures, systems and biases that we all experience and are influenced by on a daily basis. Liza facilitates the course by holding a mirror up and encouraging an unpacking of how we are affected by these barriers, by creating a brave space for everyone to bring their full-selves, experiences and hearts. I feel so privileged to have been part of the 2023 cohort, to know other women’s ‘why’ and carry it with me in my professional life. Fa’afetai tele lava Liza for seeing and speaking on problems that are usually disregarded with such grace and empathy. Fa’afetai tele lava to the 2023 cohort for the honesty and love during our time together. 10/10 highly recommend if you want to understand the thinking behind building projects that are intersectional and beneficial for anyone involved."

The Regenerative Leadership Framework

Pillar One -
Embodied Awareness

The first pillar of Regenerative Leadership is Embodied Awareness. Cultivating a foundation of embodied awareness is the first step to cultivating self-awareness and self-compassion as a Regenerative Leader.  When we are aware of our inner voice, our intuition, and the deep wisdom held in our body's knowledge, we cultivate the resilience needed to handle the interpersonal and systemic complexities of modern leadership. We use mindfulness, creative expression, somatic awareness, gentle movement, and other tools to strengthen the relationship between our inner direction and the inherent wisdom held in our bodies.

Pillar Two -
Self & Identity

The second pillar of  Regenerative Leadership is Self & Identity. Through this pillar we explore the contexts in which we were raised and the contexts which currently shape our lives, both professionally and personally. We explore how these contexts shape our experiences, and we work to uncover how these experiences inform the inner story we walk with each day. We work to integrate new knowledge, experiences, and visions to rewrite an empowering story about our leadership and work that reflects our joys, triumphs, learnings, and deepest gifts. Through this process we create a personal definition of success and how we serve.

Pillar Three -
Systems & Culture

The third pillar of Regenerative Leadership is Systems & Culture. In this pillar we seek to understand how our collective systems and culture(s) shape how we move through the world. We explore the theme of systems through the interconnectedness inherent in our families, communities, and institutions. We learn to identify our individual location in these systems and how that shapes who we are. We also learn to identify how our collective systems are rooted in histories of colonialism and oppression. We cultivate "brave space" and identify practical ways to implement transformative action in the systems we live and work within.

Liza lives and works on the unceded ancestral lands of the Ohlone, Ramaytush Ohlone, Muwekma Ohlone and the Coast Miwok in what is now called Pacifica, California - a place she now calls home. Liza acknowledges that the original stewards of this land continue to play vital and active roles in the Bay Area and beyond.

Liza also recognizes her ancestral lands  - Kō Hawaiʻi Pae ʻĀina (the Hawaiian Islands), particularly ka mokupuni o Oʻahu (the island of Oʻahu), a me ke ahupuaʻa o Waimānalo (and the land division known as Waimānalo) - the place where she was born and raised by her mother and grandmother. Liza thanks her ancestors for their guidance and support as she lives away from her homeland.
